Here's our list of five teams we think would be fun to manage from the non leagues all the way to the top in FM23.
One of the great challenges of Football Manager is taking a lower league side up the leagues. Starting a game with a tiny budget and poor players and trying to develop a side is great fun. Even better, and even more difficult, is to download a non-league database from the Steam Workshop and take a non-league side to professionalism and even further. This list will give you some ideas of some interesting non-league saves.
1. Sutton Coldfield Town
Sutton Coldfield Town are an old club founded way back in 1879 based close to the city of Birmingham. The old Roman town of Royal Sutton Coldfield has a population of around 100,000 people which makes it one of the largest places in the UK without a professional side. Sutton Coldfield Town are surrounded by Aston Villa and Birmingham City, who have most of the fans in the region. The Royals have lots of potential for growth. Can you take Sutton Coldfield Town up the leagues to become the biggest club in the Midlands?
2. FC Isle of Man
FC Isle of Man are an extremely unique team to manage. Despite being based on the Isle of Man, they play in the North West Counties League. Managing Isle of Man will mean travelling from the island back to the British mainland every away game. So, making the home stadium, The Bowl in Douglas, a fortress will be essential in the fight for success. Last season, the Manx side were promoted via the playoffs and will be looking to continue their progress upwards.

3. Bury A.F.C.
Bury A.F.C. are a phoenix club after Bury went bust a few seasons ago. After the original club folded, Bury’s fans decided to reform. Now they play in the North West Counties League. Bury A.F.C. will hope to follow in the footsteps of fellow phoenix clubs like AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley, who have been able to rise up the leagues again. The Shakers managed to win the league last season. Are you the manager to continue their upward journey?

4. Macclesfield FC
Another team in the ilk of Bury A.F.C. is Macclesfield FC. This phoenix club was created in place of Macclesfield Town, which went bust in 2020. Recently, the BBC made a fascinating documentary chronicling the tales of Macclesfield FC presented by former Welsh international Robbie Savage, who also is a member of the club’s board. The club’s aim is to ultimately return to professional football and, hopefully, the Football League, where the original Macclesfield Town were playing until 2020. Can you take Macclesfield FC back from the seventh tier to the fourth tier and beyond?
5. Taunton Town
For the first time in their history, Taunton Town are available to be managed on the full game of Football Manager. Last season, the Somerset-based club got promoted to the National League South. Taunton are a club with a very tight budget, so the first aim will be keeping them up. Goalkeeper Jack Bycroft, who is on loan from Southampton, will be massively important in Tauton’s quest to stay in the National League South. Equally essential will be Welsh midfield duo Lee Lucas and Lloyd James, who will provide dynamism and creativity.
