From Coventry's Premier League return to Lincoln's historic promotion, these five English clubs offer very different challenges for your first FM27 save.
Promotion and relegation have created five very different English save ideas for Football Manager 27.
You can fight for Premier League survival after a generation away, handle the expectation of an immediate return or protect a club that has just completed one of the most important promotions in its history.
Sports Interactive has confirmed that FM27 will launch in November, with the exact date and supported platforms still to follow. Our FM27 release date guide tracks the confirmed details. These are pre-release save ideas based on the clubs' real 2026/27 circumstances, not previews of their FM27 database entries. Starting squads, transfer budgets, player ratings and the final playable competition list remain unconfirmed. The recruitment restrictions below are optional rules for your own save.
1. Coventry City

The challenge: Build a Premier League club after 25 years away
Coventry City are back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2000/01 season.
The Sky Blues completed their journey from League Two to the top flight by winning the 2025/26 Championship title. The Premier League's official guide details a 25-year absence that included time three divisions below England's top tier.
That history gives the save a clear first objective: survive without losing the identity that made promotion possible.
The temptation will be to replace half the squad immediately. A more interesting approach would be to keep the promotion group involved, recruit players who can develop with the club and avoid building a wage structure that depends on permanent Premier League status.
Your most useful signing might be someone who can contribute from the bench now and become a regular starter in two seasons. That is a better foundation than a collection of expensive short-term fixes.
Optional save rule: Restrict your first two transfer windows to players from EFL clubs, players released by Premier League clubs and graduates from your own academy.
Survival would be an achievement. Establishing Coventry as a stable top-flight club would be the real project.
2. Hull City

The challenge: Turn a dramatic return into lasting progress
Hull City returned to the Premier League after a nine-year absence and immediately produced a result their supporters will remember.
The Tigers beat Manchester United 2-0 on the opening weekend. The Premier League's match report also notes that eight members of Hull's starting line-up had played for the club in the Championship the previous season.
That continuity gives this save a useful identity. How far can you take the players who earned promotion before the demands of the Premier League force bigger changes?
One result does not remove the scale of the task. You still need to prove that promotion was the beginning of a sustainable period rather than another short visit to the top flight.
This job suits managers who enjoy gradual squad evolution. Identify the players who can remain useful across several seasons and recruit around them. Strengthen the weakest areas without treating every member of the promotion team as replaceable.
Optional save rule: Start at least seven members of the promotion squad whenever fitness and availability allow during the first season. Lower that requirement gradually as the club becomes established.
Survive first, target the top half later and eventually take Hull back into European competition.
3. West Ham United

The challenge: Handle Premier League expectations in the Championship
West Ham United offer the pressure save.
The Hammers were relegated alongside Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. For your save, the obvious target is an immediate return to the Premier League.
That sounds straightforward until the Championship schedule begins. A 46-match league season punishes poor squad depth, tactical inflexibility and slow recoveries from bad runs.
Expect plenty of opponents to defend compactly and make you earn the opening goal. You will need a system capable of creating chances against a deep defence without leaving the squad exhausted by the winter.
Promotion is the first objective. The more interesting long-term job is deciding what West Ham should become after returning.
Build around a homegrown core, give academy players meaningful minutes and resist solving every weakness with an expensive signing. A younger squad will still need experienced leaders, especially when a difficult away fixture falls between two must-win home games.
Optional save rule: Give at least two club-trained players 15 league starts each during your first full season, using academy graduates already in the senior squad where necessary.
Win promotion, strengthen the connection between the first team and academy, then return to European competition with a squad built to stay together.
4. Lincoln City

The challenge: Protect a historic promotion and keep climbing
Lincoln City may offer the best long-term save on this list.
The Imps secured Championship football for the first time in 65 years with a 2-1 win at Reading. Their official promotion announcement confirms that the 2026/27 season ends a wait stretching back to the 1960/61 campaign.
Unlike West Ham or Wolves, Lincoln should not be judged by whether they win promotion immediately. Staying competitive in the second tier would already represent another substantial step.
The challenge is to improve the squad without dismantling the structure that delivered promotion. Recruitment must support survival today while bringing in players who can still contribute as the club grows.
Loans can supply quality you cannot yet afford permanently, but avoid relying on an entire first team that disappears at the end of the season. Each summer should leave you with more players worth building around.
Optional save rule: Limit permanent signings in your first season to players from League One, League Two and non-league clubs, alongside promotions from your own academy. Use loans to fill the remaining gaps.
Survive, consolidate and work towards the first top-flight season in Lincoln's history. The 65-year wait was for a return to the second tier; reaching the Premier League would be something entirely new.
5. Wolverhampton Wanderers

The challenge: Reset a relegated club without chasing a quick fix
Wolves begin 2026/27 in the Championship after losing their Premier League status.
The club has described an immediate return as its objective, including in its official early-season preview. That creates pressure similar to West Ham, but you can give this rebuild a different emphasis.
A relegated squad may contain players whose reputation, wages or ambitions no longer fit the division. Selling everyone can remove too much quality, while keeping everyone can leave you with an expensive and unsettled squad.
Before entering the transfer market, divide the squad into three groups: players who can lead the promotion attempt, younger players who can develop and players you would sell if the right offer arrives.

Optional save rule: Make permanent signings aged 23 or under until Premier League status is restored. Judge them on their ability to help now as well as their potential resale value.
The goal is to return with a younger, more balanced squad that can compete in the Premier League without another complete rebuild.
Which FM27 English Save Should You Choose?
Choose Coventry if you want to turn a long-awaited Premier League return into a permanent home. Pick Hull if keeping the promotion squad involved is central to the story you want to tell.
West Ham suit managers who enjoy promotion pressure and an academy-led identity. Wolves offer the same urgency with a stronger focus on reshaping the squad and buying young.
Lincoln are my pick for a slower career built around recruitment, development and several achievable milestones. Taking them into the top flight for the first time gives the save a destination that could keep you invested for years.
