Who counts as a free agent in FM26?

A free agent is an unattached player who can be approached without negotiating a transfer fee with a club. The original selection used a minimum in-game Current Ability of 100. This edition preserves those names and position groups, while using the FMB Ability and Potential ratings from the Database wherever the identity is confirmed.

ABI is FMB Ability: current quality. POT is FMB Potential: the player's ceiling. Both use our 1–99 scale, with the same colours throughout the Database.

By default, the tables show players recorded as unattached in the FM26 Database. Use Availability to see players from the original list who have a club, or choose the entire original list. Check in game means we could not confirm a matching Database profile; no rating, photo or profile link is guessed.

Search includes additional nationalities from the original shortlist. The EU tags retain that list's classification. Always check the registration rules and player availability in your own save.

What counts as a free agent in FM26?

A player without a club can usually be approached without a transfer fee. This page defaults to players recorded as unattached in the FM26 Database. Their availability and willingness to join can differ in your own save.

Why are the tables sorted by Ability rather than Potential?

Free-agent recruitment often focuses on immediate impact. Every position starts with the highest FMB Ability, with Potential alongside it. Select another column heading to sort and select it again to reverse the order.

What do ABI, POT and the colours mean?

ABI is FMB Ability and POT is FMB Potential. Both use the FM Blog 1-99 scale rather than raw in-game CA or PA. Purple is 90-99, blue 80-89, teal 70-79, gold 60-69 and slate 1-59. Potential is a ceiling, not a guarantee of future improvement.

Why does a player from the old free-agent list now have a club?

The original list and the FM26 Database do not contain identical club information. Players with a club remain available in the Entire original list and At a club views, but are excluded from Free agents only. The club link opens their Database club profile.

What does Check in game mean?

We could not confidently match that original entry to a Database player. The supplied name, age, nationality and position remain available, but ratings, photos, profile links and current availability are not inferred from a namesake.

Should I trial a free agent before offering a contract?

A trial, where available, can help your coaches assess attributes, fitness and suitability. Check the scouting or coaching report and compare the player with the options already in your squad before agreeing a contract.

Does free transfer mean the player costs nothing?

No. Wages, signing-on fees, agent fees and bonuses can still make the deal expensive. Compare the full contract commitment with your wage structure, not just the absence of a transfer fee.

Why is there no wage filter?

An unattached player has no current club wage, and a zero in the Database is not a zero wage demand. This page does not invent contract expectations. Check the agent discussion or negotiate in your own save.

Does the EU tag guarantee registration eligibility?

No. The EU filter preserves the tags in the original shortlist. Competition rules, work permits and home-grown requirements still need to be checked in your own save. The tag is a search aid rather than an eligibility decision.

Why can a nationality search show a different flag?

The flag shows the primary nationality. Search also includes the additional nationalities supplied in the original list, so a player can match a country that differs from their displayed flag.

Should I offer a short deal or a longer contract?

Consider age, fitness, expected playing time and your budget. A short contract with an optional extension may suit cover or an experienced stopgap. A longer deal should reflect the role you can offer and the total financial commitment.

Is poor match sharpness a reason to reject a free agent?

Not by itself. A player without regular matches may need training and controlled minutes to regain sharpness. Use trial and medical information to distinguish a temporary fitness issue from a longer-term concern.

Why do some players appear in more than one position?

The original shortlist grouped players into several recruitment positions. Those appearances are retained. The position badge uses the Database record where matched, which can be narrower than the original grouping.

How can I keep the full contract cost under control?

Check basic wage, bonuses, signing-on fees, agent fees and wage-rise clauses together. Avoid promising a playing role you cannot provide just to reduce the headline wage. A deal should fit your squad plan as well as your budget.

When can I register a free agent?

Check the rules and registration deadlines shown for your competition in FM26. Being able to approach or sign a player does not necessarily mean you can register them immediately.

What else should I check before signing?

Review the player report, injury history, personality, preferred foot, role suitability and registration requirements. A headline rating helps compare quality, but does not replace the information needed for your particular squad.

How do I search and copy a player name?

Search by name or nationality, combine the EU, age and availability filters, then select a position. Press Copy beside a player and paste the name into FM. If clipboard access is blocked, the page selects the name for manual copying.

How do the tables work on mobile?

Scroll horizontally to see all columns or use the mobile sort menu. Search follows the tables when the screen leaves enough reading space. The Info button contains the longer instructions, and Reset returns to Free agents only with the other filters cleared.
