Here's a list of 5 clubs that have been relegated, which could be a great save to manage them on FM23.
Like a lot of people, I like to take on a bit of an easier first save with a big club to sink my teeth into what’s new, what’s changed and what’s going to be successful on the new instalment. But, when it comes time to get stuck into my first “proper” save, it's hard to beat a relegated club trying to claw their way back up to the promised land. So, with that in mind, here are my 5 favourite relegated clubs that will make for a tasty save on Football Manager 2023.
1. Derby County
One of the most common FM22 saves is back. While we all tried to steer Derby away from relegation on FM22, Wayne Rooney didn’t have success in real life, and the Rams start life in League One at the beginning of FM23. With Max Bird, Jason Knight and defensive stalwart Craig Forsyth all remaining with the squad after relegation - and a far less turbulent ownership than on FM22 - you have the bones of a team more than capable of coming straight back up and building a club to be reckoned with.
2. Bordeaux
Despite rumours, that they would be looking at life in the third tier of French football, FC Girondins de Bordeaux have had something of a lucky break. Following a last-placed finish in Ligue 1, a punishment related to their poor financial health had initially condemned Bordeaux to a season in Championnat National, France’s third tier. This was appealed, and Les Girondins will begin FM23 in Ligue 2. Plagued by a tricky financial situation - and in the league below arch-rivals Toulouse - this is not a happy time at Matmut Atlantique. Will you be able to resurrect this fallen giant?
3. AS Saint-Ettiene
Sticking with France, as one of the powerhouses of French football succumbed to a shock relegation this season. Saint Ettiene remain one of the most successful clubs in France and are seen as “old money” compared to the newfound riches of PSG. For them to begin the 22-23 season in France’s second tier is nothing short of a disaster for the club. With a highly regarded youth setup, and their superb reputation, returning at the first time of asking should be a straightforward task; however, in a tightly contested league, nothing is guaranteed. Your task doesn’t end with winning a promotion either. You should be looking to rebuild this once-great club to ensure no disaster of this scale ever happens again.
4. Willem II
Willem II are sadly no stranger to relegation. Relegated twice in the early 2010s - both times returning to Eredivisie at the first time of asking - they are also no stranger to promotion, and as a club, know what it takes to return to the top tier of Dutch football. While there has been some relative stability in Tilburg, a 17th-place finish was enough to see the Superkruiken drop into a highly competitive Eerste Divisie. You’ll need to be at your best, and handle the pressure that comes with being a heavy favourite for the title.
5. Cagliari
Another club on this list who have been through some turbulent times, Cagliari, have developed a reputation as something of a yoyo club. Frequent promotions and relegations between Serie A and Serie B have seriously hindered their ability to build long-term success. However, this passionate fanbase on the island of Sardinia are desperate for another swift return to Serie A and have all the necessary tools to make a long-term stay in the top flight.
Conclusion
I hope you’ve found this list interesting, and look forward to bringing any of these fallen clubs back to the level they belong.
