Football Manager 27 Playtesting Is Open - Apply Now

Sports Interactive has opened FM27 playtesting applications. Find out how to apply, who can join and what selected testers will do.

Sports Interactive is opening FM27 development builds to a wider group of players as it changes how community feedback reaches the development team.

Football Manager 27 Playtesting Is Open - Apply Now

Sports Interactive has opened registrations for a new Football Manager 27 playtesting programme, giving selected FM players the opportunity to play early development builds and provide feedback before the game reaches its final stages.

And this feels like more than the usual call for testers.

For FM27, Sports Interactive says it is expanding playtesting to a wider group of players, with testing due to begin in the coming weeks. The studio has also partnered with FirstLook, a platform designed specifically to help game developers recruit testers, distribute access, collect feedback and manage testing communities.

After the turbulent transition to FM26 and the criticism surrounding areas such as the user experience, interface, bugs and general polish, the significance of that decision is difficult to ignore.

Sports Interactive clearly wants more players looking at FM27 earlier, and crucially, it wants their feedback while there is still enough development time to actually do something with it.

FM27 Playtesting Applications Are Now Open

Anyone interested can now register for the FM27 playtesting waitlist.

Being on the waitlist does not guarantee access. Sports Interactive says applications will be reviewed and that it wants players with a variety of Football Manager experience.

That last part is worth paying attention to.

You do not necessarily need to be someone who has played Football Manager for 5,000 hours, won the Champions League with a semi-professional club from Iceland and owns a spreadsheet tracking the development of every 16-year-old in South America.

In fact, SI specifically asks applicants to answer questions about their Football Manager experience honestly because it wants different types of players involved.

FM27 Playtesting

🎮 Want to Playtest Football Manager 27?

Sports Interactive is now accepting registrations for the FM27 playtesting programme.

Selected players will receive access to early development builds of Football Manager 27 and will be asked to play the game, provide feedback, complete surveys and report bugs.

How to register:

1. Open the official FM27 playtesting registration page.
2. Sign up using Steam or your email address.
3. Complete the questions about your Football Manager experience honestly.
4. Join the waitlist.
5. If selected, you will receive further instructions from the programme.
Important: registering your interest does not guarantee that you will be selected.

What Will FM27 Playtesters Actually Do?

This is not simply early access to FM27 in exchange for nothing.

Sports Interactive wants selected players to play as much as possible and actively contribute to the development process.

Testers will get access to development builds containing new FM27 features and improvements. They will then be expected to provide feedback, answer surveys and report bugs they discover while playing.

That feedback will be passed back to Sports Interactive's internal teams, who can use it when making further changes to the game.

Selected testers will also gain access to exclusive testing areas on the Sports Interactive Forums and Discord, where they can interact with other testers as well as members of SI's Community and Development teams.

That final part could prove particularly valuable.

A bug report tells a developer that something is broken. A wider discussion can explain why something feels frustrating, confusing or unnecessarily difficult to use.

For a game like Football Manager, that distinction matters enormously.

Why Is Sports Interactive Doing This?

SI's own explanation is straightforward: the studio wants community feedback to reach its teams early enough for that feedback to be reviewed during development.

But there is some obvious wider context here.

FM26 represented one of the biggest changes Football Manager had undergone in years. It brought the series onto Unity alongside a redesigned interface and major changes to the way players interacted with the game.

It also produced plenty of frustration.

One of the recurring complaints from sections of the community was not simply that individual bugs existed, but that certain usability problems felt like things experienced FM players would have identified quickly during extended real-world play.

That makes FM27's expanded playtesting programme particularly interesting.

Sports Interactive has not said that this programme exists because of criticism directed at FM26. We should not pretend it has.

What SI has said is that it has learned from previous programmes and user feedback, wants to give more people access to testing, and wants feedback delivered with enough time for its internal teams to review it.

Put those things together and the direction is pretty clear: FM27 is being exposed to a broader range of players earlier in its development cycle.

What Is FirstLook?

The other interesting part of the announcement is Sports Interactive's partnership with FirstLook.

FirstLook describes itself as a player relationship platform built for game studios. In practical terms, it provides much of the infrastructure required to run large-scale organised playtests without managing everything through separate spreadsheets, emails, forms and Discord tools.

Its playtesting system can handle things such as player waitlists, game access, NDA agreements, surveys, Discord roles and feedback management.

That matters because inviting hundreds or potentially thousands of players to test a game is only useful if you can organise what those players are telling you.

Imagine 1,000 FM players simply sending SI free-form emails after playing FM27.

One tester hates the scouting screen. Another finds a repeatable crash. Someone else thinks the transfer AI is behaving strangely. Fifty people report essentially the same navigation problem using 20 different descriptions.

That is a mountain of information rather than useful data.

A structured platform gives Sports Interactive a better chance of turning those experiences into patterns that development teams can actually investigate.

SI Is Also Running In-Studio FM27 Playtests

The FirstLook programme is only one part of the testing process.

Sports Interactive has confirmed that it is also conducting in-studio playtesting.

For those sessions, SI says it is working with community members who have consistently provided useful Football Manager feedback in the past, whether that feedback was positive or negative.

Some members of the community are being contacted directly by the Sports Interactive Community Team.

That detail is encouraging because useful testing does not mean finding people who already agree with every design decision.

Good playtesting needs players who can explain precisely why something works, why something does not, and what happened before they reached that conclusion.

This Is Not the FM27 Beta

There is another distinction worth making immediately.

This is not an announcement of the traditional Football Manager pre-release beta or early access period.

These are development builds used for testing.

If you are selected, the purpose of your access is to help Sports Interactive test FM27 rather than simply giving you an opportunity to start your long-term save early.

Development builds can contain unfinished systems, bugs, temporary elements and features that may still change before release.

In other words, if your first instinct is, "Great, I can get FM27 early", you are slightly missing the point.

The interesting opportunity is being able to influence what everyone else eventually gets.

Who Should Apply?

If you regularly play Football Manager and are willing to spend time explaining your experience properly, there is little reason not to register.

That includes hardcore players, casual players, tactical obsessives, recruitment addicts, long-term save players and people who simply interact with FM differently from the traditional core audience.

That variety is useful.

A player with 20 years of FM experience may immediately notice that a familiar workflow now requires twice as many clicks. A newer player may expose something completely different: a feature that veterans understand instinctively but the game never explains properly.

Both observations can improve the finished product.

Could This Make FM27 Better?

Playtesting alone will not magically fix Football Manager 27.

You can have thousands of testers and still make poor design decisions. Feedback can conflict. Development time is finite. Some problems are dramatically harder to change than players realise.

But there is a huge difference between receiving valuable criticism two weeks before release and receiving it while developers still have time to investigate, iterate and test an alternative.

That is why the timing of this programme matters more than the simple fact that SI is recruiting testers.

The studio specifically says the programme is designed to get feedback heard ahead of the next Football Manager with sufficient time for internal teams to review it.

That is exactly where community playtesting can be useful.

FM27's Development Cycle Already Feels Different

Football Manager 27 has plenty to prove.

FM26 laid the foundations for Football Manager's new era, but changing technology was never going to be enough on its own. The next step has to be making the experience faster, clearer, more intuitive and more polished.

Opening development builds to a wider group of players does not guarantee that will happen.

It does, however, give SI another layer of information before those decisions become locked into the version millions of players eventually receive.

And after everything that happened around Football Manager's transition into the Unity era, more testing with actual Football Manager players seems like a very sensible place to start.

Preparing for the Next Football Manager

While FM27 development gathers pace, there is still plenty of life left in your current saves. Our Mastering FM26 eBook covers the systems and strategies that can help you get more from the current game before the next cycle begins.

For players who want the complete collection, the FM Blog eBooks & Game Planner Bundle brings our guides and planning tools together in one package.

And if you want to support FM Blog while getting access to our members-only content and extras as we move towards FM27, you can also join FM Blog Premium.

For now, though, the most interesting Football Manager 27 opportunity is free.

Register for the playtest, answer the questions honestly and, if you get selected, actually test the thing.

FM players have spent years explaining what they would change about Football Manager.

Some of them are now going to get the chance to make those arguments before the game is finished.
