FM27's first deep dive is due early this week. We traced SI's announcements, forum updates, X posts and official videos to see how the build-up compares with FM26.
Published 21 September 2026. This comparison covers information available before the first FM27 deep dive.
It is 21 September, and the familiar Football Manager ritual has become an exercise in refreshing tabs. The official website. YouTube. X. The SI forums. Where is the first proper look at FM27?
There is now a more useful answer than “soon”. On 18 September, the official Football Manager account said its first deep dive was being finalised and would arrive “early next week”. That points to the beginning of the week starting Monday, 21 September. It does not specify Monday, a release time or the subject of the video.
That update matters. Describing FM27 as a game with no news would miss several official announcements, including that one. What players have been waiting for is a detailed public demonstration of the game itself.
FM26 offers a useful comparison. By this date last year, its first-look video, interface showcase and women's football video were public, and PC/Mac pre-orders were open. But its long playthrough was still a month away. The difference is real; the details are more interesting than a simple claim that SI has gone silent.
The 18 September update changes the story
The most relevant source is SI's official X update from 18 September. It narrows the broad September reveal window to the start of this week.
Official FM27 update: the first deep dive is being finalised for early the following week.
Football Manager, 18 September 2026
As of this article's cut-off, we are waiting for that first deep dive. We are not past a specifically announced 21 September deadline. If the video arrives later today or in the next few days, that would be consistent with the wording SI used.
Our question is therefore about the campaign's pace, the information still missing and the standard the first reveal needs to meet. A comparison with last year can help answer those questions. It cannot tell us whether an unreleased build is good.
What Sports Interactive has actually said about FM27
The public trail starts before the August announcement. These are the relevant development and communication milestones we could establish, rather than every promotional mention of Football Manager.
| Date in 2026 | Official communication | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 11 May | Miles Jacobson's review of FM26 | An acknowledgement of problems with the FM26 experience and changes to the studio's approach. Context for the next game, rather than an FM27 feature reveal. |
| 13 July | Wrapping up FM26 | SI identifies 26.3.2 as the final FM26 update and discusses the work ahead and rebuilding confidence. |
| 11 August | FM27 playtesting registration opens | A selected-player feedback programme for development builds. Applying does not guarantee participation. |
| 27 August | Getting ready for FM27, with a community video and social posts | A November launch window and a September start for feature deep dives and initial gameplay looks. |
| 4 September | Alpha invitations begin going out | Invitations and onboarding, including an NDA. This is not the date of a public beta launch. |
| 8 September | Official Discord launches | An additional community channel. The forums continue to carry official updates. |
| 18 September | First deep dive update on X | The first instalment is being finalised for early the following week. No precise day, time or feature is named. |
Watch the official 27 August community update below. Its role is to explain the plan for FM27 communications; it is not a feature walkthrough.
The accompanying forum FAQ also explains the commercial approach: pre-orders will open closer to launch, after players have seen more of the game. Exact release dates, platform information and further purchasing details are to follow. Advanced Access arrangements are not confirmed there.
For the latest confirmed release information, our FM27 release date, beta and pre-order guide keeps those questions together. The FM27 playtesting guide explains the separate testing programme.
The official Football Manager Discord opens as another community channel.
Football Manager, 8 September 2026
It is easy to blur those categories. An alpha invitation shows that SI is recruiting testers. A Discord launch shows that it is opening another route for discussion. Neither gives the wider audience the same evidence as a recorded session in which somebody actually manages a team.
There is also a small mismatch in the original plan. August's FAQ said Discord would launch alongside an upcoming deep dive. Discord went live on 8 September; on 18 September, SI was still finalising the first deep dive. The public sequence therefore changed, although those announcements do not explain why.
FM26 versus FM27: what was public by 21 September?
The fairest comparison freezes both campaigns on the same calendar date. It keeps FM26's later reveals out of the picture until we reach them in the full timeline.
| Milestone | FM26 by 21 Sep 2025 | FM27 at this article's cut-off |
|---|---|---|
| First-look video | Published 4 September. | First deep dive announced for early the week of 21 September. |
| Feature videos | Interface on 10 September; women's football on 18 September. | The first detailed reveal is still awaited. |
| PC/Mac pre-orders | Open from 10 September. | Planned closer to launch; no opening date confirmed in the cited announcements. |
| Release information | 4 November 2025 announced. | November 2026 window; exact date still to come. |
| Long playthrough | Not yet published. It arrived on 20 October. | Not established by the announcements examined. |
| Public paid beta | Not yet available. Advanced Access followed in October. | Private alpha recruitment is a different programme. |
FM27 is behind last year's public reveal schedule. That is an observation about published material, not proof that development is behind schedule. SI has also explicitly changed when it intends to ask people to pre-order.
There is a smaller but useful comparison here: FM26's interface video appeared on 10 September. By 21 September, players had had eleven days to inspect and argue about it. FM27's first deep dive is arriving at a point when last year's audience was already discussing specific screens and features.
The FM26 campaign, from first teaser to full release
Last year's rollout had distinct stages: an August social teaser, a short first-look reveal, individual feature showcases, a long playthrough, paid Advanced Access and full release. Treating all of those as “gameplay” hides how gradually the picture emerged.
| Date in 2025 | Milestone and source | What players received |
|---|---|---|
| 13 August | Social teaser and forum discussion | The summer campaign's opening teaser, promising a match-day first look. Not a full demonstration or pre-order launch. |
| 4 September | First Look Reveal | A 1 minute 13 second video introducing the visual direction and match presentation. |
| 8 September* | Release announcement's displayed website date | The official article names 4 November and states that PC/Mac pre-orders start on 10 September. |
| 10 September | PC/Mac pre-orders and Reimagined User Interface | A 10% pre-purchase offer through approved retailers, plus the interface showcase and written deep dive. |
| 18 September | Introducing Women's Football | A dedicated 2 minute 27 second feature video. |
| 25 September | Match Day Experience | A 3 minute 31 second showcase, with a supporting feature article. |
| 2 October | Game-Changing Tactics Spotlight | A 4 minute 14 second explanation of the tactical changes. |
| 7 October | Console pre-orders open | Xbox and PS5 orders begin. The 10% PlayStation discount requires PS Plus. |
| 20 October | First Look Playthrough | Spencer FC and Jarrod Bowen in a 1 hour 28 minute official video, considerably more sustained viewing than the earlier showcases. |
| 21 October | New Game Experience | A 1 minute 40 second video about beginning a career. |
| 22-23 October* | Advanced Access beta announcement and rollout | Eligible PC/Mac pre-purchasers gain access on Steam and Epic, with career progress carrying into the full release. See the date note below. |
| 4 November | Full release and launch trailer | The main launch across PC/Mac, Console, Mobile and Apple Arcade Touch. The original announcement scheduled Nintendo Switch Touch separately for 4 December. |
A note on dates: SI's release article displays 8 September, but its body explicitly gives 10 September as the start of PC/Mac pre-orders. Its beta “available now” article displays 22 October, while contemporaneous release coverage gives 23 October for access. We have retained that discrepancy rather than treating a website datestamp as an independently verified unlock time. Video dates above were checked on the official YouTube uploads. This is a timeline of the principal campaign milestones, not an inventory of every licensing post or platform-specific announcement.
The TransferRoom recruitment deep dive also belongs to FM26's written feature coverage. We have linked it separately because the current page does not clearly establish its original publication date.
The most revealing gap came after pre-orders opened
Watch FM26's interface showcase and then its later playthrough. Both were official videos, but they offered different ways to judge the game.
The shorter video introduced the design. The extended session gave viewers more time with the experience of moving through a save. That matters in Football Manager, where a screen can look impressive for a few seconds but become tiring after hundreds of visits.
Those intervals are calculated from the dates above. Players could commit money well before this longer demonstration appeared. Earlier publicity therefore did not automatically mean a long period of informed scrutiny.
FM27's plan to take pre-orders later could improve that sequence. The test will be whether the footage available before sales open answers practical questions about playing the game. Moving the purchase button closer to launch would achieve little if the information remained superficial.
Why the first FM27 deep dive carries more weight
SI has already acknowledged why trust needs rebuilding. In his May review, Miles Jacobson discussed the disappointment around FM26's interface, navigation and loss of immersion, and accepted responsibility for a game that had not met expectations. That admission gives the next reveal a clear job: show how the experience has changed.
Our seven things we need to see in the FM27 first look sets out the wider wishlist. For this investigation, three kinds of evidence would make the biggest difference.
- A complete everyday task. Open a player, compare options, review a report, make a decision and return to where you started. Let us follow the navigation rather than jumping between selected screens.
- Specific changes with context. Identify what has returned or been redesigned, which version of the game is being shown and what remains work in progress.
- Enough continuity to judge the feel. Leave ordinary transitions and interactions in the footage. A useful first deep dive does not need to reveal every feature, but it should demonstrate something players can assess.
These are our editorial expectations, not promises SI has made about the upcoming video. Its subject and format were not specified in the 18 September post.
What the timeline does, and does not, tell us
The evidence supports a fairly precise conclusion. FM27's public feature rollout is starting later in September than FM26's did. The studio has communicated through its website, forums, YouTube and X, opened a testing programme and launched Discord. It has now given the first deep dive a narrower arrival window.
That record does not establish a delay to the November release window. It also does not establish that the game is ready, that the interface has been fixed or that a particular feature will appear in the first video. Those judgements need evidence from the game.
On 21 September, the useful question is what SI will put in front of us this week. Last year's campaign showed that a calendar full of reveals could still leave the longer demonstration close to launch. FM27 has an opportunity to make its first substantial look more informative, even if it arrives later.
What would you need to see in the first FM27 deep dive before you would consider pre-ordering?
