Whenever you start a new save, one of the first things to do is try to improve your squad. Negotiating with other clubs can sometimes be difficult. So signing players who have release clauses in contract is much easier. This list will give you some ideas of some of those players on FM23.

1. Sander Berge - Sheffield United

Sander Berge is a fantastic central midfielder. The Norwegian international plays in the Championship for Sheffield United but should certainly be playing at a higher level. Berge can play as a deep-lying playmaker, box-to-box midfielder and even behind the striker. His versatility, technical skills and dynamism make Berge a player who would be ideal for a top-half Premier League side or even a side in Europe. Berge still has room for growth and has a minimum fee release clause of £25 million.

2. Victor Nelsson - Galatasaray

Victor Nelsson is a Danish international defender who plays for Galatasaray in Turkey. Nelsson's mental attributes suggest that he could be destined for a top team. Also, Nelsson is a superb man-marker. Aged only 23, he will definitely keep improving if he continues to play first-team football. At the beginning of the game, Nelsson would be ideal for a mid-table side and could later be sold on for a decent profit. The Dane has a release clause of £21.5 million. What’s even better, though, is that Nelsson can actually be picked up for about £9 million. Definitely worth signing.

3. Paulo Dybala - AS Roma

Paulo Dybala is an elite forward with a cheap minimum fee release clause of just £17.5 million. However, Dybala has only just signed for Roma, so you may have to wait a while to prise away La Joya (The Jewel) from the Stadio Olimpico. If you can get hold of Dybala, you’ll have an extremely creative attacking midfielder who is able to play in the hole as a false nine or cutting in from the wing. Dybala also has the canny knack of scoring goals. Keep him on your shortlist, especially if Roma don’t make the Champions League.

4. Rui Silva - Real Betis

Rui Silva is Real Betis’ goalkeeper. Having had a few successful seasons at Granada, the Portuguese goalkeeper moved on to Real Betis to fight for the number-one spot with Claudio Bravo. Silva’s form led him to being picked for the Portugal national team for Euro 2020. So far, he has just the one cap but expect Silva to add to that number. Rui Silva is known for making excellent saves and has great reflexes. With a release clause of £18 million, he could be a great deal for many sides.

5. Kenneth Omeruo - Leganes

Former Chelsea youth player Kenneth Omeruo now plays in Spain for Leganes. Although Omeruo plays in the Spanish second tier, he definitely has the ability to step to at least a bottom-half top-tier side. The strong defender has a release clause of just £6.5 million, so he could be a bargain. Omeruo, who is a rock at the heart of Nigeria’s defence, is a tall, rangy centre-back who can also play as a right full-back.
