With the right development, many Scottish youngsters are capable of becoming key players in successful sides on Football Manager 2022.

Things have been looking pretty rosy for Scottish football in recent years. Qualifying for the delayed Euro 2020 broke a 23-year wait for tournament football, and with Ukraine and Wales standing between them and the World Cup in Qatar, there’s every reason to fancy their chances. Add that to some very respectable performances from Celtic and Rangers in Europe over the last couple of seasons, and it’s certainly a very good time to be a Scottish football fan. With that in mind, I’ve created a list of the best Scottish players to sign on FM22.

Billy Gilmour

This one might seem obvious, so bear with me. The highly-rated Chelsea prospect, Billy Gilmour, has been on many Scottish fans’ radar for a while, as his move to Chelsea from Rangers created quite a stir for a Scottish teenager. His technical ability, vision, and work rate make him an excellent prospect for a deep-lying playmaker, especially if you can improve his tackling. While he may cost a fortune from Chelsea at the beginning of the game, I’ve seen multiple long-term saves where he moves on for pennies after failing to hold down a first-team place. On my current save, Gilmour left Chelsea in 2025 for £3.2m, an absolute bargain for such a high-potential player. Certainly, one to keep an eye on, but he’ll lead your midfield for a decade if you can get him.

John Souttar

John’s an old favourite of mine. I’ve signed him on almost every save on every FM edition since 2014. A talented defender with excellent passing ability - and good leadership qualities to boot - John Souttar can be the rock at the back for a Premier League side for years to come. His first touch and passing ability also means he can comfortably be retrained as a midfielder. He’s off to Rangers in the summer from the winter update, so you might need to wait for this one, but he’s certainly worth the wait.

Aaron Hickey

Only 19 years of age, Aaron Hickey is nailed on for a huge future in the game. With good physicals, good technical ability for his age, and an eye for a long shot, Aaron Hickey seems to be the long-term answer for that left-back slot that’s already so rich for Scotland. He regularly moves to some of the biggest clubs in FM 2022, so you’ll need to be quick, but if you can get him and keep him, you’ll never need to worry about a left-back ever again.

Ryan Christie

There’s a reason Bournemouth opened their chequebook for Christie. With exceptional vision, good finishing, an abundance of pace and the ability to play anywhere in midfield, Christie can do it all. Bournemouth aren’t keen on parting with him but left to hone his craft a little longer in the Championship, and you’ll have a player more than capable of leading the way for a Premier League side in no time. He may set you back around £20m, but he’s absolutely worth the cost.

Calvin Ramsay

A right back out of Aberdeen’s academy, Ramsay has the ability from crosses and set pieces to be a serious attacking weapon for your side. He doesn’t come cheap, with Aberdeen looking for around £5m to part with him, and his defensive ability isn’t quite up to scratch yet, but with the right development, he can easily become one of the best players in Scotland. He’s also more than capable of stepping up to a higher level. One for the future, but worth the investment if you can get his development right.

Lewis Ferguson

The son of Derek Ferguson and nephew of Barry Ferguson, young Lewis has the finest pedigree in Scottish football. A real all-rounder - with the work rate, team work and natural fitness to go with is - Lewis Ferguson quickly becomes a real asset in Scotland’s already talented midfield. Use him as a box-to-box midfielder, and the sky’s the limit for where he can go. Again, he is not a cheap option as Aberdeen know what he’s worth, but he’ll be at the heart of your midfield for the long-term and has the mental attributes to be an excellent captain.
