So, who are the top bargains for Championship managers looking to build a second-tier juggernaut on FM22?

Tim Ronning, GK

If you like to keep your squad with a strong Scandinavian theme, then take a look at Tim Ronning of Elfsborg. You might not be able to sign him without having a clear reputation for playoff contention, but he will likely sign for many clubs in the second-tier.

A fee of around £2m would be needed to convince Elfsborg to sell. Ronning is an excellent modern goalkeeper, and at 22 he could be the ideal pick-up for the long-term.

 

Tobias Lawal, GK

Another young goalkeeper who you could likely nab in the Championship, Tobias Lawal plays for LASK in Austria. He is a 21-year-old who already has some big experienced at this level, and though he might cost you something in the region of £3m to sign it would be money well-spent.

He is a thoroughly modern goalkeeper who could be ideal for any team trying to build a side that dominates the ball but needs a reliable keeper they can trust. Unlike Ronning, he should be able to easily get picked up by most teams in the top-half of the Championship.

Scott McKenna, CB

Left-footed, tall, relatively athletic, and good in a back two or three? Scott McKenna is a fine pickup for any Championship side looking to get promoted. At around £4m from Nottingham Forest, he will not be cheap, but you could build your defence around this solid big 24-year-old.

McKenna has ability and natural talent and with enough time and effort he could become a Premier League level defender. You might need to find him the right partner – someone more technically adept – so he can thrive, but McKenna is a more than serviceable CB option.

 

Jores Okore, CB

A 28-year-old Danish international, Jores Okore looked set to have a fine career before injuries ruined his progress. He has previous experience of the English game, and the fact he is out in China might mean you need to stretch a bit to meet his wage demands.

Okore, though, would be a tremendous signing for any Championship club with around £4-5m to spend on a ‘marquee’ defender. Okore has the ability to get you promoted, he is that good at his level. Might struggle the next level-up, but Okore could definitely thrive in the hustle-and-bustle of the Championship.

Fredrik Bjorkan, FB

An excellent left-back/wing-back, Fredrik Bjorkan is one of the many stars of the Bodo/Glimt side making such a big impression in Europe this year. He is a talented lad, and could probably be picked up for around £3m. His natural stamina makes him ideal for a team that wants to attack, as he can run all day and make up for any positional errors with his sheer speed/

At 22 he has many years of growth, too, and offers the ideal kind of ‘moneyball’ signing from the Scandinavian leagues that tends to underpin our lists of Championship bargains.

 

Sam Byram, FB

Having always played well in the second-tier, being able to land Byram from Norwich City for around £4m should be doable. The player is not likely to get much game time in the top-flight, but has shown on numerous occasions that he can easily handle the Championship.

At 27 he is ready to play from day one and would offer you a great player to add to any Championship side. Definitely on the more expensive side on this list of bargains, but he would make a good choice for any team desiring to get promoted.

Patrick Berg, CM

Another star from the Bodo/Glimt side, Patrick Berg might be the hardest to land on this list but at 23 he would is a no-brainer of a signing. Theis creative midfielder can play passes for fun, can set up chances for his teammates, and can even score a few from the deeper #6 position.

An excellent technical player and someone who you could easily rely upon to get the job done if you want a star midfielder. Might cost you as much as £4-5m, but that is money well-spent for a player with potential to be worth multiples of that.

 

Patrick Olsen, CM

At 27, Patrick Olsen might be a player who can fill in a gap for you at second-tier level for a good while yet. He is a solid all-around player and could be available for as little as £1.5m. Olsen is a fine player with good technical abilities and stamina for the price you would be paying.

He makes a good choice for any team trying to inject a bit more steel into the side, though he would also make a good investment for any manager trying to add more consistency and availability in midfield.

Saido Berahino, CF

You might fancy yourself as a bit of a problem solver, and for around £1-2m you could take on Saido Berahino. The striker has talent, that is clear, but there is a reason he plays for Sheffield Wednesday at age 27. Despite breaking through into Premier League teams at a young age, a mixture of issues has stopped Berahino from making good on his obvious potential.

Perhaps you could help him to find his verve again? Berahino is a bit of a challenge to manage, but if you can get him firing he’s easily a Championship level striker who is currently plying their trade in the third tier.
