Here's why we think that Southampton could well be the best save on FM23 and get you excited to head to St Mary’s when FM23 is released.
There’s already one English PL side that’s caught my attention for an interesting save on FM23.
For fans of youth development saves, this club are already well respected and should already be very high on your list, but based on their summer business, they’re already set up for more immediate success.
Are you ready? It’s… Southampton.
That’s right, the Saints are already front-runners for my first proper save on FM23. This article will explain why I think this high-potential club could well be the best save on FM23 and get you excited to head to St Mary’s when the game is released.
On paper, I think Southampton’s squad is very exciting and more than capable of a top-half finish in the Premier League with the right guidance. Adam Armstrong and Che Adams have long been high-performers on FM when used correctly and can form a deadly striking partnership in the Premier League. A number of tricky creative players such as Stuart Armstrong, Mohammed Elyounoussi, Nathan Redmond and new arrival Joe Aribo make for an exciting and dynamic midfield, while Salisu and highly-rated Armel Bella-Kotchap will provide a solid defensive pairing to build on. On the right side, you have an excellent choice between Kyle Walker-Peters and Tino Livramento, who, by all accounts, will retain his wonderkid status in FM23 as well.
All this before mentioning the jewel in your crown: James Ward-Prowse. Captain, leader, set-piece god. Still only 27 and about to reach his prime, JWP has been the beating heart of this Southampton midfield for years, and his influence on the club cannot be overstated. If you can fend off interest from bigger clubs, he’ll be the basis of your midfield for another 5 years at least, and his incredible delivery from set-pieces can be used to devastating effect.
You all know about Southampton’s youth academy. The world-class facilities at Staplewood seem to be an endless conveyor belt of talent, turning out player after player of Premier League capabilities. Why wouldn’t you want to manage a club with this pedigree?
Livramento is the most obvious youngster ready for first-team action, with Thierry Small, Will Smallbone, and Kamari Doyle the pick of the bunch to make the leap in the future. With further investment, you can continue to benefit from the world-class regens available to Southampton.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s 4-4-2 (or 4-2-4 depending on who you ask) can be a highly effective tactic in real life, and even more so in Football Manager. With a highly technically-gifted squad, with great natural fitness, you can afford to press high and pass short, working the ball into dangerous areas through your inverted wingers, and feeding your very capable strikers. You don’t have to be stuck with Hassenhuttl’s real-life tactics, however, as this quad possesses the attributes and the positional versatility to perform a great number of tactics to a high level.
Playing in the most-watched league in the world, with one of the world’s most formidable youth academies, the potential has always been there to turn Southampton into a force to be reckoned with. I hope this article has opened your eyes to the possibilities at St Mary’s, and you’ll be excited to turn Southampton into a force in English football. Due to the competitiveness of the Premier League, it won’t be easy, but what a rewarding save it would be to finally lift that title with a home-grown squad built on the south coast.
