What is Portsmouth’s history?

English football is home to many storeyed clubs, and Portsmouth definitely fall into that category. Pompey are a big club in the South Coast, and have in their history enjoyed a few big moments. They were champions of England twice, doing so in 1949 and in 1950. They also won the FA Cup, most recently in 2008 under Harry Redknapp.

Most people know of Portsmouth for their Premier League run, though it all came crashing down amid financial ruin. The club now sits in the third tier of the game and is trying to get back to the Premier League organically. Quite simple – get promoted. Portsmouth has spent too long in the third and fourth tier, and getting back to at least Championship football is the aim. You should therefore be looking to build as much as you can in the third tier; you are expected to win but also do so with style. This means you should be willing to try and find your best XI and stick with them as much as you can so that you can get results in the short term.

In terms of finances, you will not have much to play with as COVID-19 has ravaged the books of a club like Portsmouth. Therefore, you should be looking to be innovative with your scouting, building a team slowly but surely that can do a bit of damage in the second tier. Promotion within your first year, though, is more or less expected: failure would need to come with some major caveats.

 

Who are the best players at Portsmouth?

In terms of playing staff, Portsmouth are not exactly blessed with many stars these days. Your key first-team talent includes Marcus Harness and Joe Morrell, two midfielders who you could easily build around. Shaun Williams and Ronan Curtis are both good enough for League One, while the latter could develop into a Championship talent in time.

Outside of this, though, many of your players are very much people who are League One standard. This means that the likes of Ryan Tunnicliffe might do for one season, but not any longer. In terms of young talent, you might wish to look to find a space in the team for Haji Mnoga, who is a young English player who can cover at full-back and centre-half.

There is not much to work with at Portsmouth, but there is enough that you could build upon it and turn this great club into something worthwhile again.
