Sometimes, we can find that Football Manager lets us go a touch too far in our ambitions and dreams.
For many people, for example, it can feel unrealistic to take a tiny club from
the sixth tier in England all the way to European glory. By the same token,
defending the UEFA Champions League as Glasgow Celtic can feel a touch
impossible.
If you want to manage a genuinely big club where success wouldn’t feel
unrealistic, but you still need to do some building to begin with, start at
any of these clubs.
Super Depor is a team that fans of football in the early 00s will remember
fondly. From overturning massive scorelines against AC Milan to winning the
league title that nobody expected, Deportivo are a club that could be
restored.
Today, though, they are absolutely awful! They are debt-ridden, suffering massively, and have a pretty poor squad. Rebuild them, though, and you can soon bring in a new generation of Juan Carlos Valeron’s!
While ‘fallen’ might sound extreme, Torino are an original Italian superclub
that no longer can compete at the top. They have not moved on with the
times, and today are a team that simply cannot compete with the top teams in
Italy.
As one of the genuine superpowers of Eastern European football, Spartak
Moscow could be a contender for every title in Europe. They are the most
popular club in Russia but have endured a pretty barren existence since the
turn of the millennium.
Hamburg SV have been a popular choice on such lists for years, but the
reason is simple. When they are at their best, they are arguably the third
biggest club in Germany.
Deportivo de la Coruna
Today, though, they are absolutely awful! They are debt-ridden, suffering massively, and have a pretty poor squad. Rebuild them, though, and you can soon bring in a new generation of Juan Carlos Valeron’s!
Sunderland
Sunderland are a genuine big club in the English game and could make an
excellent club to bring back to the top. They have genuinely competed for
titles and European spots for portions of their history, and (say it
quietly) are realistically a bigger club than local neighbours Newcastle
United across modern history.
However, the Black Cats are out of luck and find themselves down the third
tier. Can you turn them around and get them back to the days of Peter Reid
and Super Kev Phillips?
Torino
With your guiding hand and smart signings, though, you could take the famous
Grande Torino name back to the top of the Italian game, and also compete in
Europe.
Spartak Moscow
While they have tasted some success recently, the club is a bit of a
non-entity in European terms. Can you get them back to competing at the top
end of the European game? It’s certainly possible.
HSV
A former European Cup winner, HSV have endured shockingly tough times in
recent years and find it hard to progress beyond even the second tier today.
Can you help to establish them as a massive power in the Bundesliga again?
It will be challenging, but if anyone can do it, you can!
