About the club
Spurs are a London club that have done consistently well since the inception of the English Premier League in 1992. They are the finalists of the UEFA Champions league in the 2018-2019 season and have also finished runner up in the English premier league the season before. They are known for building a strong squad with minimal budget. They now have many superstars in their ranks.
The board's expectations
Spurs are in the UEFA Champions League, so the minimum requirements from the board would be;
- A top 4 league finish (automatic qualification to the champions league)
- A QF< finish in the UEFA Champions League
- At-least reach the final of the FA cup.
Given their newfound consistency, the Spurs board will require the manager to play attacking possession based football with the focus on youth players.
You will also be required to sign good young prospects for the first team squad and develop youngsters from the club’s youth system.
Spurs recently moved into a new stadium and have excellent training facilities available at their disposal. This should definitely help their young players in reaching their potential.
They also have a decent youth set up with them producing the occasional star.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
The current Spurs squad has a variety of talent, especially in the attacking department.
What is even more impressive is that their stars are relatively young in age, so should be able to hold on to them, you can easily build an empire around them.
There are quite a few tactical setups you could deploy with Spurs, however the best suited ones will be controlled possession/vertical Tiki Taka. This should provide the fast paced attacking football that board demands and could make use of all the fine attacking talent at your disposal.
However, against quality attacks or tough away games, one could go with a fluid counter attack formation or wing play. A 4-2-3-1 is the most stable formation for Spurs. It will help you accommodate their stars in their preferred positions and also their attacking style of football.
However, in tough away games, you can go with a 3 man defence, with a 352 or a 3-4-1-1.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-2-3-1 formation is as follows;
- Hugo Lloris as a sweeper keeper.
- Serge Aurier & Danny Rose as wing backs, you can increase their crossing frequency if you wish to make use of the attackers’ aerial prowess.
- Toby Alderweireld & Jan Vertonghen will make up the centre back pairing and both can be played as Ball playing defenders considering that they’re comfortable on the ball.
- Eric Dier as your Ball Winning midfielder, he will help in winning and recycling possession.
- Tanguy Ndombele as a Deep Lying Playmaker with Support Duty.
- Christian Eriksen as an Attacking Midfielder, will pop up with some crucial goals in important matches
- Son Heung-Min on the left wing as a winger or as an Inside Forward & Lucas Moura on the right wing as a winger.
- Harry Kane as a DLF, pressing forward or as an advanced forward.
Alternatively, when you change to a 3 at the back formation, you can make Davinson Sanchez as the 3rd centre back and play Dele Alli as an Attacking Midfielder behind Kane
Key Players
1. Harry Kane
Arguably one of the best strikers in the world and is a natural finisher who is ever hungry for goals. Keep him fit and he will aid your cause with 20+ goals every season.
2. Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen’s vision and passing range is second to none, he will make a deadly combination with Harry Kane and together the duo will be a hindrance for most defences.
3. Tanguy Ndombele
Tanguy Ndombele is their new signing but is a bag of potential. The French man’s game has drawn comparisons to that of Paul Pogba and he could be a future superstar in the making.
Weaknesses
- There is absolutely no depth behind Harry Kane in the striker’s department. One injury to the striker and your entire season may hang on the balance.
- Growing discord about wages with some squad players like Eriksen & Alderweireld nearing the end of the contract.
- Not a lot of room to manoeuvre in the transfer and wage department with very tight budgets considering the club’s aspirations
- The overall quality of the back-ups may not be up to the club’s standards.
Youngsters to keep an eye on
There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are;
- Troy Parrott (ST)
- Oliver Skipp (CM)
- Kyle Walker Peters (RB)
