Back again with another instalment and we're still here with Crawley. You can catch up with the previous chapters HERE. I've given it a couple of weeks to perfect some ideas and perfect this save in the hope of one day becoming Champions League contenders... or maybe even League 1 contenders. Onto the action!
PORTSMOUTH, LEAGUE TWO (4TH)
We head into January with the hope of being given some extra budget and a few victories after our 2 game winning run ended our past episode. We started off very poor and within 25 minutes Gwion Edwards picks up another injury! Later we learned this would keep him out for a shocking 2 months..Late in the match Portsmouth get a great break away and get a cracking team goal which would be the only goal and gave Pompy the deserved win. The one thing I'm upset about is the loos of Gwion, the star player that gave us hope.
CAMBRIDGE UNITED, LEAGUE TWO (19TH)
Going into this game, I felt confident. A because we're two places above, B - because we're a better team throughout. We started strongly with the memory of Gwion Edwards strong in our minds, we put in a goal in the back of the net in the 10th minute with Shamir Fenelon bundling home. This game was looking ours until Cambridge were given a shocking penalty towards the end... MISSED! We are looking safe with the win, we make sure of this win with a second with the last kick of the game to end it Crawley Town 2, Cambridge 0.
NOTTS COUNTY, LEAGUE TWO (20TH)
Straight into the next mid week game and we play against a Notts County team without a win in 6 games. Things were looking up with Crawley being given the lead early on with another cracking Shamir Fenelon strike and his second of the season. Notts county hit us back on the break and get a sudden equaliser. Going in to half time the game was at 1-1, we needed to change something so I decided a full on attacking mentality was the only thing that could fire us to a second successive victory, which it did. We got a 3-1 victory with Gavin Tomlin getting two great finishes towards the latter stages which gives him 6 for the season. 2 wins on the bounce!
YEOVIL, LEAGUE TWO (23RD)
Going into this game on the back of two wins, there was a massive sense of hope in the squad. Could we make it 3 from 3 and go with 6 points of the League Two play-offs... Lets not get ahead of ourselves, we are Crawley Town. We started this game with a successful 4-4-2 formation with the demon partnership of Fenelon and Tomlin up top. Unfortunately, today wasn't to be our day. We ended up going down 1-0 before half time and that's the way the game ended, completely outplayed by a club who are certain for National League football next season. This left us in 19th.
MANSFIELD TOWN, LEAGUE TWO (21ST)
For our final game of January, we played an out of form, goalless in 3 games Mansfield. Confident of bouncing back, we did just that. Mansfield opened the game up with a lovely strike in the 4th minute to make it 1-0 which fired us up for what was to become our greatest result so far. We took the game to them, Gavin Tomlin got a quick two goal reply to take the game to 2-1 at half time. The same was to follow up in the second half, Shamir Fenelon went on a cracking run which ended with a carefully placed finish. Mansfield made a desperate attempt to get the game back by scoring a late goal, only to be cancelled out by a great goal from Callum McFadzean to end the game at 4-2.
ROUND UP
Overall, I'm happy with how the squad handled January with a few injuries and a lot of goals scored. 3 wins from 5 will probably keep me up this season and also leaves me in 14th and just 7 points from the play-offs.
