The Greek Super League is dominated by Olympiakos. The Athens based club have won the league an unbelievable 21 times since 1997 and 42 times in total. This list of Greek teams to manage will give you ideas of teams to overtake the mighty Olympiakos.
Panathinaikos
Panathinaikos are historically one of Greece’s biggest clubs as they have won the league 20 times, have never been relegated and are also the country’s oldest club. However, in recent times, the Shamrocks have lived Olympiakos’ shadow without winning the title since 2010. The main reason for the club’s lack of recent success is because of financial difficulties. The club start the game with £13 million of debt, and £425,000 is payable on a monthly basis.
These fiscal problems will necessitate the sales of some of Panathinaikos’ best players. Some of the highest earners will need to leave. These include the club’s star striker, ex-Manchester United forward Federico Macheda, Argentine winger Lucas Villafáñez, and the new signing Brazilian midfielder Mauricio. Balancing the books while challenging for the upper reaches of league is going to be tough. Are you the manager to do it?
Larisa won their only Greek Super League title in what was known as the Miracle of 1988 when they upset the applecart by surprisingly taking home the title. Getting Larisa back that former glory will be a huge challenge.
The club has a relatively weak squad and is expected to finish mid-table as they have done commonly in recent years. Former Football Manager wonderkid Tim Sparv is a tenacious defensive midfielder, and his midfield partner is Serbian attacking midfielder Radomir Milosavljevic. Meanwhile, Dimitris Pinakas is a wonderful prospect who has come out of Larisa’s youth system.
Recently promoted Apollon Smyrnis are the epitome of a yo-yo club, having been promoted and relegated 12 times in the last 20 years. This is a club desperately in need of stability. Apollon are one of the smallest clubs in the Greek Super League, and they are certainly going to be in a relegation fight. They begin with a transfer budget of zero and a tiny wage budget, so fighting the drop will be tough.
Brazilian Thomas Bedinelli is an exciting option on the wing, and he will hopefully provide the creativity needed. Lithuanian midfielder Vykintas Slivka is a good player in the centre of the park, and Andoni Fatjon is a gritty ball-winning defensive midfielder. The squad is generally ageing, though and all in all needs a revamp. Can you keep Apollon in the division?
Aris are one of the better teams in the Greek Super League but have never previously taken home the title. They, therefore, have a strong squad with former Porto man Bruno Gama being the star player. Experienced Spanish midfielder Javi Matilla is a technically gifted playmaker.
Aris will take part in the Europa League next season. So, to compete on multiple fronts, the squad will need to be strengthened further. However, the board offers a really limited transfer budget; thus, free transfers and land will be the key.
