With Football Manager 2021 set to come out in November, Sports Interactive have kept quiet on what new features will be included. Usually, they start to come out during September and October. In a bid to get us all properly excited for the new season, though, here are some features that we wish we would see in FM2021.
Though many of these are unlikely, they are, in our view the most significant changes that we could see come into an edition of FM. What, then, do we think are must-have new features that could/should be added?
Youth team progression
One factor that would be nice would be to be able to become the youth team coach at a club and build your way up. This has been suggested many times in the past and is a popular suggestion. It would add a new way to start a career, as many of us start careers at teams that would feel quite unrealistic. It might feel more authentic to start at the Liverpool youth team as opposed to replacing Jurgen Klopp!
Coach interaction
Another factor that could be improved is the coach interaction side of things. While improved, it can still feel quite hard to really get to know your staff. Given your staff are the most fundamental part of the way that you work on a daily basis, it would be much better to have more interaction with staff. Weekly meetings that are similar to a chat with players would make sense, making it much easier to build a plan with your staff.
Director of Football interaction
Following on from the above, the lack of interaction between manager and Director of Football is really annoying. Hopefully, this is adjusted in Football Manager 2021, as at present you can only add targets or remove them from the list. It would be better if you could interact with them and discuss targets, prices, wage caps etc. in a less mechanical way than you can at the moment.

3D training
One feature that would make a lot of sense would be a more interactive training module. At the moment, many players simply leave their Assistant Manager in charge and pay attention on the day or two before the game. Training at the moment is simply spreadsheet management; it would be nice to be able to set training drills that you see take place, create patterns of play, or even work on set pieces and see the results.
For now, we only have very limited training feedback and a generic Training Rating to go by; we need more given the importance of coaching and training in the modern game.
3D changes
This has been a long time coming and is drastically needed. The 3D engine makes small, often imperceptible, improvements year-on-year. However, the fact that we still have such wooden animation, a lack of any visible tricks or flair, or even a balanced enough variety of shot types can really hurt the enjoyment at times.
Even simple things like having varied hair lengths or beards applied to models (even randomly or in combination with the Hair Length 'attribute') would boost immersion.
Football Manager is an outstanding title, but the above changes and additions would certainly help to add a bit more 'oomft' to the playing experience for everyone.
