Benefits of Artificial Grass in Modern Football and Football Manager

Artificial turfs have already been widely adopted in some major clubs in leagues and regions like Russia, Northern Europe and Alpine nations like Switzerland and Austria to improve cold-weather playing conditions. Yet few clubs from top-five leagues have adopted this practice, why?

Whilst playing Football Manager I've come up against some English lower league clubs and clubs from Russia who play their home matches on artificial grass and it made me wonder should we have sports pitch surfacing options available in the game. There seems to be a lot of benefits of having such turf and I'm going to list just some of them.

Costs and Upkeep

Lower costs and upkeep are some of the major reasons why clubs should be using this type of turf. Unless you manage a major club with a healthy balance you know that every Pound counts, and relaying the pitch time and time again after poor weather conditions may take a great stab at your club's balance. Artificial turfs don't require mowing, and they require less maintenance in some situations. Even thou it might be costly at first to install the artificial turf, in the long-run clubs profit from such investment. The best proof of this claim comes from French club Nancy, who were first ones to switch to artificial grass from major five European leagues.

Playing Time

Synthetic turf allows for more playing time. Except thunder and lighting, artificial turf will allow matches to continue in all types of weather. Heavy rain can cause clubs to postpone or even cancel matches due to poor pitch conditions, and if your club has artificial turf you won't have that problem. You can play on average 250 hours on natural grass per season, artificial grass is always playable.

Footwear and Injuries

Some serious injuries can be afflicted with modern day football shoes due to them having metallic tips at the bottom. You can imagine the pain when someone hits you full-power with these. Artificial turf allows you to use a variety of footwear, including indoor shoes or turf shoes, a hybrid shoe that looks like an indoor shoe with bump-like treads on the bottom. Also, there seems to be a belief that artificial grass causes more injuries than the real thing, yet in reality, this is not the case. FIFA’s study of the U-17 Championship in Peru in 2005 concluded there were very little differences in the incidence, nature and causes of injuries observed during games played on artificial turf compared and those played on grass.

Game Style and Pace

Imagine trying playing Tiki-taka style on a lower league turf where you have uneven cut grass, bumps and ruts, in short - you can't imagine this scenario yet alone try and replicate it with your team be it in reality or in Football Manager. You'll find these obstacles absent from an artificial turf.
