Should Sam Allardyce become the new England manager?

After Roy Hodgson departed his post as England manager after England's humiliating last-16 defeat to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016, the FA are on a lookout for his successor and with 4/7 odds, "Big Sam" looks set to take his place. Is Allardyce the best man to fill this position?

If you like to bet on sports then the odds of 4/7 should be no brainier on who to put your money on as a new manager of the Three Lions. Sam Allardyce has been made a top favourite for the position, followed by the former German player/manager and current USA manager, Jurgen Klinsman, who had been given 4/1 odds and is second favourite to take charge of the Three Lions.

But is the 'Big Sam' the best man to fill this position? Let us look at some cons and pros to why he should or shouldn't be appointed for this role.

Pros. Experience, Sam Allardyce surely has it in abundance having managed in the top flight of the English football since 2000. His biggest achievement was leading Bolton back to Premier league and finishing sixth in 2005/2006 season, that saw Bolton qualify for UEFA Cup, where Bolton played well to only be beaten by Marseille in the knock-out stage.

Has always managed mediocre team, and last season he saved Sunderland from certain relegation. If he can work his magic with under performing England then this would really be a great thing.

He doesn't fear to voice his opinion about his players to media or the players themselves. This is one major attribute former England managers lacked, with all Roy Hodgson, McClaren and Sven-Göran Eriksson all lacked a level of conviction and willpower, but Sam should be a breath of fresh air in this respect.

Has a very rigid system in which players are aware of the roles they play in his system. England tried playing lots of different tactics with various managers that tried simulate world's heavyweights like Spain and Germany, but maybe it's a rigid system with solid defence that is much needed, and this is what Big Sam does the best.

Cons. While only managing mediocre teams has it's advantages, it also carries its drawbacks. It is a big issue that none of the top six in the Premier League never even considered hiring him for position. This could mean that England are in substance settling for what is available, rather then to aim higher up the ladder on manager market.

In 2015/2016 West Ham looked for their former player Slaven Bilic to take the club into new highest and dismissed Sam of his position in the role of the manager in belief that he can't do it. FA could be in an awkward position hiring manager that wasn't good enough for a mediocre team.

In 2006, Sam was beaten for position to Steve McClaren. Has much changed in the last ten years, or are the FA simply running of options? This remains to be seen...

Boring football! A major criticism of Sam Allardyce over the years has been his tendency to enforce a drab style of football. To this he responded that even the tactical genius that is Diego Simeone also would have the same label in England, despite his levels of success. This could be partly true, but to draw comparison with the winner of La Liga and two times Champions League finalist with Big Sam would be unprofessional to say the least.
