Time to look back at this years edition of Champions League group stage, and see which teams benefited the most and who are the flops.
One of the winners comes from Group A, current Premiership champion Manchester United progressed rather easily to the knock out phase in a fairly difficult group without a lost match. Grabbing the wins against teams such as Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Real Sociedad and always though opponent Shakthar. Many questioned David Moyes manager skills, but he managed to prove them all wrong, and is now facing Olympiacos in the last 16, fairly easy job most would say, and kind of a reward for good campaign this season in the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, Shakhtar has to be the biggest loser from this group and one of the biggest in this stage of Champions League generally, as they only managed to grab UEFA Europa League place. Let’s remember that they had more than good campaign last year, reaching the quarter finals, only to be beaten by Barcelona. Everyone at the club hoped of doing the same job this year around, or maybe progressing further in the competition. So grabbing only Europa League place will most definitely be seen as a mayor failure. More Champions League odds can be found at William Hill line betting.
Group B also has it’s winners and losers. Real Madrid are amongst three teams that progressed to the knock out phase without a loss (et al. Man UTD, Atl. Madrid), but Galatasary deserve the title ‘Winner’ from this group. In a though competition between European giants Real and Juventus, they managed to secure second position in the last group match against Juve, and secure their place in the knock out phase. On the other hand, Juventus, champion of Italian Serie A, is seen by most as the biggest loser of this years Champions League. They managed to secure measly 6 points from 6 games, and will now have to continue their European journey in the UEFA Europa League.
Looking elsewhere, another big Italian club failed to deliver the goods and was thrown to the lower level of the European competition, Serie A runners up - Napoli. But it has to be said that they were handed one of the toughest groups in the competition, last years Champions League runner up Borussia Dortmund and ever present teams Arsenal and Marseille. Interestingly, they managed to tie in points with Dortmund and Arsenal at the end, but were disappointed to find out that they were knock-out out of the competition due to worse goal difference.
Those were the most noticeable this years winners and losers in Champions League. Other winners; Bayer Leverkusen, PSG, Olympiacos, Bayern Munich, Man City, Chelsea, Schalke, Atl. Madrid, Zenit, Barcelona and AC Milan. Teams that failed to deliver; Shakhtar, Juventus, Benfica, Basel, Napoli, Porto, Ajax and Celtic.
Last 16 draw some big names together, Man City vs. Barcelona and Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich. Other matches; Olympiacos FC vs. Man UTD, AC Milan vs. Atletico de Madrid, Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs. PSG, Galatasaray A.S. vs. Chelsea FC, FC Schalke 04 vs. Real Madrid CF and Football Club Zenit vs. Borussia Dortmund.
