Eight teams will battle for four tickets to Brazil 2014, and one of the top stars of European football won't make it to the next World Cup.
FIFA announced the draw for the playoffs and one of the most expected game will be without a doubt Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal against Zlatan Ibrahimovic’ Sweden.
Brazil 2014 will miss either Real Madrid star Ronaldo or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, from Paris Saint-Germain. In the coming weeks, a lot of people will be paying special attention to sportsbook reviews for this game.
These teams have met 15 times, with six wins, six draws and three losses for Sweden. For Portugal, this stage is nothing new; in 2010, they had to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina to earn a spot for South Africa.
“Besides having one of the best strikers in the world (Ibrahimovic), the quality of Sweden is their collective spirit. They finished second in a group that had one of the best European teams and were potential winners in Germany”, said Portugal coach Paulo Bento after the draw.
Another great match up will be Ukraine against France. Like Portugal, the French squad played in the playoffs of the last edition. They needed a controversial goal from Thierry Henry to defeat Ireland in extra time.
Didier Deschamps' team has met the Ukrainians seven times, with Les Bleus winning four games and drawing the remaining three.
The other two encounters of the playoff are Greece-Romania and Iceland-Croatia. Romania leads the series against the Euro 2004 winners, with 17 wins, eight draws and eight defeats. Meanwhile, Croatia has won the only two previous meetings against Iceland.
The first legs will be play on November 15, with the returns scheduled to take place four days later. The winners of this series will join the other nine qualified teams: Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, England, Russia, Belgium and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
