We received one interesting comment from our reader, which intrigued our imagination and threw us into deep thoughts. How would it be to have off field issues in FM14?
Normally, the first thing we did was an open discussion on the official forum of Sports Interactive related to this topic. We asked hard-core FM players how would they like to have this option in FM14 or maybe in some other (newer) version of Football Manager and we also gave them the option to indicate whether they vote for or against this feature in FM.
But before we tell you some of their opinions, let us be clear on what exactly we mean when we say ''Off field issues''. Imagine a situation where, for example, Wayne Rooney get’s a board suspension for betting at Castle Jackpot, or John Terry has to go to court so he misses a few games, or even maybe a Player X get’s in a bar fight etc.
These are just some of the examples of players misbehaving that managers at clubs have to deal with daily. Now, would this be too much for us to handle with already game being fairly complex? Well, we’re off the opinion that it wouldn’t, and that this would only bring an extra dose of realism to the game, and would radically change our gameplay.
The only problem with this feature ever happening is that the guys from SI think that it would be tarnishing the name of real players and that could bring some other problems with it. Okay, we get that. But let us not forget that FM is much more than just real players in the game, because the game is largely composed of artificial players aka regens. So why not give them this option? Think about it SI.
Now on to the opinions of FM players:
Honestly, it's enough of a hassle managing player demands for 1st-team play and improved contracts, I don't want to manage paternity suits and bar fights, too.
It would be a great addition, but you could just imagine John Terry going to the SI offices and having a right pop at Miles for making his in-game personality difficult.
You could use the option to start the game with all regen names, then they could implement the extra off-field issues.
They used to have this feature, with a Regen "spotted outside a nightclub the day before a game" so you could fine him or something. Only regens though. Also, in or around 2002/03 (pre-animated CM/FM) you also had players being violent on the pitch and in training. "Alan Smith has elbowed Lee Dixon!!!" Rare, but it happened.
Now that's what I really miss. I wish SI would've stayed with that "hidden" command that opened up all of the various bad behaviours of people in the game. It was hidden enough that the masses didn't know about it, but it was also easy enough to implement for those that read the forums regularly. It was great fun.
And lastly, the results of our poll if you’re for or against this feature went in favour of those who think that this should be achieved. Not by much though, 39 votes for, versus 34 votes against. But still, this also proves that majority of FM players are for this feature to be implemented into the game.
Finally, we ask you for your opinion on this particular matter. Are you for or against ‘’Off field issues’’ and do tell us your reasons why.
