Referred as Croatian Messi, Mateo Kovacic has a wonderkid status since FM11 when he was only sixteen. Surely he has a great potential, but can he live up to the status that has been given to him? Let’s find out…
First we’ll check his starting ability in FM13
So Dinamo Zagreb’s “Messi” at a young age is already showing signs of great potential. Best played as an Advanced Playmaker in support duty, his starting attributes for this role are fairly good. Most noticeable and worth mentioning are; First Touch, Technique, Creativity, Flair and Teamwork, ranging from 14 – 16. Attributes that need a work on; Passing, Decisions, Work Rate and Stamina.
Scout report from Pantaleo Corvino from Barcelona:
Our scout is not at all impressed by Mateo. His recommendation was that he’d be a useful signing for Barcelona. Regarding his Current Ability, Corvino reckons that he would be a decent signing for most clubs. And regarding his Potential Ability, Corvino believes that it could lead him to becoming a good attacking midfielder in the future. We have to say that as discouraging this scout report is, we’ll take it with a bit of doubt, and the main reason for this is the fact that this is a scout report for a high profile club like Barca, where you have at least 5 World Class midfielders already.
Estimated Cost – £9.75M – £12.75M Again this is just a report card, and we assume you could get him for lower price than our scout assumes.
Wage Demands - £58K p/m - £77K p/m
|Main Strength – Speed||Main Weakness – Team Player||Personality – Fairly Ambitious|
|Specific Strength – None||Specific Weakness – Bravery||Team Personality – Professional|
Player development in 8 years:
Well he didn’t develop in the next Messi, more like Modric, but nevertheless these are good attributes. None of them improved dramatically, but this is because he wasn’t trained and managed by a real player, but an AI.
Career stats through 8 years:
And here we can see why he didn’t improve so much. A transfer to Juventus in his first season for £6.75M, and less than 20 appearances for the first team! It is not surprising that he has stagnated with development.
Our verdict on Mateo Kovacic:
We have to say that he is nowhere of being a new Messi, more like his national teammate Luka Modric type of player. Solid attributes at the start of the game and fairly low price you’ll have to make for him, are what this player has it going in his favour. We’re of the opinion that with good training and more first team football, this young star could be a World Class, just as he was in Football Manager 2012. OUR RATING:
If you want to find more perspective players like Mateo in Football Manager 2013, then we suggest downloading our Wonderkids and perspective young players shortlist.
