Shouts in Football Manager

shouts in footballmanager
First of all let's see what are Shouts and let's try to understand them...

In the most recent versions of Football Manager, we have seen the introduction of touchline shouts. This feature has been implemented to try and simulate what it could be like to be a real football manager, shouting instructions at your players from the dugout.
The key to touchline shouts is the ability to alter many tactical sliders at ease, and at the same time. If you activate a particular shout it will have an impact on the relevant sliders. ‘Shouting’ many times, while giving different instructions, can alter an entire tactical set up. Gone are the days when you would need to enter the tactic screen and manually alter each players sliders throughout the course of a match. Shouts have revolutionised the way we can play Football Manager.
What I am hoping to bring to you is an explanation of the various shouts inside of the Football Manager engine. What do each of the shouts mean, what will they actually do in game, and when is it perhaps best to activate certain shouts. The key is activating the correct shouts while activating them at the correct time. Unfortunately that part is down to you! Can you turn the game around by using the right shout?

Altering Passing Length

Retain Possession
football manager shoutsEffect: When you need to keep hold of the ball and not give it away needlessly. Tries to keep quick long passes to a minimum.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout shortens the passing options / length of all players, while also slowing down tempo.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: When trying to keep hold of the ball in a possession based tactic; when trying to hold onto a lead late in a match; or when you’re generally noticing too many long passes falling straight to the opposition.

Get Ball Forward

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs the players to get the ball forward to the attackers a lot more quickly.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout increases the passing length of your players and also increases your tempo. You’re looking to get the ball forward as soon as possible.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: When looking for a goal late in the match; when your shorter passes are not penetrating the opposition defence – you may have high possession but you need more final killer passes.

Altering Through-Balls

Pass Into Space

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs players to play more passes into space so that team mates can run onto the ball.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout will increase the ‘try through balls’ slider.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: This shout is good to use when you have far superior players with a great amount of pace; when needing a bit more penetration in the final third; or when requiring a few more shots at goal. Well executed through balls might give your team a few more goal scoring opportunities.

Pass To Feet

football manager shouts
Effect: The opposite of ‘try through balls’. Players will attempt to pass to other team mates’ feet instead of passing into space.
football manager shouts
What Happens: The ‘try through balls’ slider will be reduced.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Great to use when you have slower players than the opposing team. Trying through balls against quicker teams won’t help you at all, because you simply wont be able to get onto the end of the pass. Also useful to use this shout when requiring much higher pass completion.

Altering Pass Direction

Pump Ball Into Box

football manager shouts
Effect: You tell your team to try more direct long balls into the opposing players box in order to gain an advantage.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Larger increase in passing length; wing backs are told to cross the ball often; defensive players through balls are decreased. You tell your team to play through the middle with less wide play. The aim of this shout is to get the ball into the opposition box to try and cause havoc.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: If you have a tall and strong target man; or when requiring a goal late in the game. You’re hoping that a mistake in the opposition penalty area will bring you good fortune.

Clear Ball To Flanks

football manager shouts
Effect: You instruct your team to clear the ball to the flanks / sides of the football pitch to try and reduce any danger.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Increases players wide play while also focusing passing to the flanks; increase in passing length but reduction in through balls for defensive players.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: When utilising a counter attack strategy where you posses quick wingers; when trying to stop the opposing team from swarming the centre late in the game when you want to hold onto a lead.

Altering Long Shots

Shoot On Sight

football manager shouts
Effect: You shout from the touchline, instructing your team to shoot whenever they get a sight of the opposing goal.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout increases long shots.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: You have not had a great deal of shots throughout the match; when requiring a goal late into the game; or when playing a match against a side who defend deep with no ambition of getting out of their own penalty area.

Work Ball Into Box

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs your team to only try shots at goal when they are in and around the box or penalty area.
football manager shouts
What Happens: When this shout is applied, you decrease try long shots.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: You are noticing too many long shots being blasted over the bar; or when creating plenty of shooting opportunities with players in acres of space, but lacking clear cut chances.

Altering Pass Location

Exploit The Flanks

football manager shouts
Effect: Your team will try to pass the ball down the flanks to your creative and quick wingers.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Central midfielders hold up the ball which in turn allows your fullbacks and wingers time to advance;passing will be directed more often towards the flanks; full backs and wingers mentality, crossing and forward runs also increased.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Possessing great wide players and perhaps noticing that the opposition has weak/slow fullbacks; when possessing great crossers; when playing on a wide pitch or when the opposition is flooding the centre of midfield which stops you from penetrating through the middle. If there is space on the flanks, then use it.

Exploit The Middle

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs your team to pass through the centre of the field.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Decreases the wide play for wingers and fullbacks and decreases their forward runs; increases mentality of all central players, forward runs also increased for centralised players.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Playing a narrow formation with a lack of wide players; when playing on a narrow pitch with a great deal of technically gifted central players; and when the opposing team are leaving far too much space throughout the centre of the pitch.

Altering Player Runs

Look For Overlap

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs your deeper wide players, more notably wing backs etc, to make more forward runs past your other wide players further up the pitch.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout increases the mentality of your wing backs / full backs as well as increasing their forward runs and crossing from further up the pitch. On the flip side of this, the mentality of central players is reduced; advanced wide players wide play is reduced; and run with ball is reduced for attacking players.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: If you posses fantastic wing backs like the Brazilian National team have for decades; when facing a narrow opposition tactic; or when requiring greater passing options in midfield. With your wing backs now advancing, you have an extra two bodies helping out in attack.

Take A Breather

football manager shouts
Effect: You instruct your team to slow the tempo down and regain some well needed energy.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout decreases some forward runs as well as decreasing global tempo.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: You are holding onto a large lead and want to keep your players fit for later in the game or perhaps the next league fixture; teasing the opposition with alternating tempo – slow, to quick, to slow, in the hope of catching the opposition wrong footed and off guard.

Altering Team Width

Play Wider

football manager shouts
Effect: You instruct your team to play with more width.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout increases your playing width as well as focusing your passing down both flanks. You’re trying to utilise every inch of space.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Playing on a narrow pitch and struggling to find any sort of space; when needing to cover the flanks from opposition attacks; when the middle of the pitch is congested.

Play Narrower

football manager shouts
Effect: You instruct your side to play narrower, condensing play.
football manager shouts
What Happens: You instruct your team to decrease the global width of your play, and to focus most of the passes through the centre of the pitch.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: The opposition are attacking through the centre of the pitch and you need to tighten that area up; if the opposition are covering the flanks but leaving some space through the centre.

Altering The Defensive Line

Push Higher Up

football manager shouts
Effect: When in possession of the ball, you tell your defence to play / push further up the pitch.
football manager shouts
What Happens: This shout increases your defensive line slider as well as increasing closing down throughout your team. You’re looking to ‘squeeze’ the opposition.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Requiring a reduction of space for the opposition to play in; when facing slow opposition strikers with no great threat of balls played behind your defensive line – when utilising a quick sweeper keeper perhaps.

Drop Deeper

football manager shouts
Effect: Instructs your defence to drop deeper when your team have possession of the ball.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Closing down is reduced throughout the team and the defensive line slider is reduced.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: Looking to ‘park the bus’ and hang onto a lead because of opposition pushing higher up the pitch (although you might invite too much pressure on your goal); when facing extremely quick strikers; when looking for more space at the back in which to pass the ball around – this strategy can be useful in counter attacking strategies where you look to draw out the opposition before hitting them on the break.

Altering Closing Down

Hassle Opponents

football manager shouts
Effect: You instruct your team to shut down any opposition player on the ball and try to restrict the space they have available in which to play.
football manager shouts
What Happens: Tempo is increased; marking is changed to man marking – tight.
football manager shouts
Good To Use When…: When playing against a slower technically inferior team. Weaker sides generally don’t like to be under any sort of pressure, therefore they will be prone to mistakes. Restricting their space should hopefully give the ball back to you.

Stand Off Opponents

football manager shouts
Effect: You tell your team to hang back from your opponents, trying to guide them away from your goal.
What Happens: Your team closing down settings are reduced as is global tempo. Loose zonal marking is activated.
Good To Use When…: Playing against a technically superior team with quick players. Pressing high up the pitch would only play into their hands as their flair players could easily use passing triangles to pass around and through you. Standing off allows you to keep your team shape at the risk of not making as many tackles of course.

Altering Tackling

Get Stuck In

EffectYour team are told to tackle harder and more aggressively in order to regain possession of the ball.
What Happens: This shout simply increases your tackling intensity to hard.
Good To Use When…: Requiring possession quicker, which could be combined with the shout ‘Push Higher Up’; when facing a team that is filled with players who have low bravery attributes because they could possibly shy away from a tackle, giving you possession.

Stay On Feet

Effect: This shout tells your team to only make tackles if they are certain they can successfully make them.
What Happens: Players tackling intensity will be reduced to easy, except for the ‘ball winning midfielder’. He stays a ball winning midfielder, unless you obviously change his role, because he needs to be trying to win you the ball.
Good To Use When…: Conceding too many free kicks, which can sometimes happen against technically inferior teams who like to fall over a lot – time waste. Technically superior teams can ride tackles if you lunge in, therefore suggesting that your team stay on their feet can help you keep shape and defensive structure.

Extreme Shouts

The following shouts can only be activated or ‘shouted’ when using the extreme strategy settings. They are:

Play Even Safer

Effect: This shout links with the contain strategy and informs your side to play even more defensively.
What Happens: All of your players except forwards are told make forward runs rarely; through balls are set to rarely also. Run with ball is also decreased.
Good To Use When…: Using the contain strategy obviously, and when you’re staring down the barrel of a gun, facing wave after wave of opposition onslaught.

Take More Risks

Effect: This shout is linked to the overload strategy and informs your team to play even more expressive and open.
What Happens: Players are allowed to run with the ball a great deal; forward runs happen throughout your teams support players; through balls are set to often for all players.
Good To Use When…: Needing a goal late in an extremely important game, like a cup final. Be careful if using this shout early on towards the end of a league game, as it might backfire and cost you that draw that you have done well to hang on to.
